We have a special guest Gayle Carvalho, president of QEA (Quincy Education Association) come and discuss the impact of recent executive orders on QPS
* Open Forum provides a space for Quincy Public School Community Members to be heard and share resources, the Citywide PTO will now start all meetings with an Open Forum. Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak about any QPS issues or news. If you are uncomfortable speaking or can’t make the meeting, message [email protected], which will be read at the open forum. If the issue warrants a greater discussion, it will be added to the next agenda after the executive board researches and/or obtains necessary information from QPS leadership.

- A group of community members attended the School Committee wearing red last Wednesday to support the efforts for Lunar New Year becoming a QPS holiday. Eight people spoke about the importance of the holiday and having it properly recognized.
- On January 22nd, the School Committee members will vote on the 2025-2026 calendar.
- Reminder: Students CAN stay home on Lunar New Year; it will be counted as an excused absence. Teachers should not have projects due and/or should not be introducing new concepts.
- For AAPI month in May, QPS will have a screening of the documentary Chinatown Rising at one of the schools—potentially North Quincy High—for all QPS community members.
- There is interest in creating a pilot program with “No Place For Hate.” Any parents interested in helping to get this program running, please email Grace at [email protected]
- Beechwood Knoll: Lion Dance for Lunar New Year
- Central: Lunar New Year Celebration/Food Event on Feb. 15th; Diversity Club creating videos about their cultures; Map on display that shows the countries around the world represented at Central
- Quincy High School: Two parents met with Mr. Ford about upcoming DEI goals
- Montclair: First Multicultural Fair since Covid in February; school counselor discussing bullying with each class
- Bernazzani: Also first multicultural fair since Covid–hoping to have it in April
- Snug Harbor: Multicultural Fair on Feb. 13th
Discussion on ways to enhance PTOs and get more family involvement:
- Create a manual and/or a Google Drive with PTO information. Those who come behind you do not have to start at the beginning. List contacts, donors, resources, how-tos.
- Have a separate event, outside of Kindergarten orientation, that introduces the PTO and ways to get involved. Explain all the acronyms, CORI, etc.
- Try to have childcare at meetings. Some schools use High School students looking for volunteer hours.
- Some schools raffle gift cards for anyone who attends the PTO meetings as an incentive.
- Some parents might not have any concept of what a PTO does. Cultural differences will make getting involved intimidating. Make sure you explain acronyms and “inside talk” in meetings and flyers.
- Promote the Citywide PTO Glossary page for new parents & the Citywide Resources page for all parents.
- Provide resources for families. Not traditionally a PTO role, but PTOs could make information available about camps, food pantries, etc.
- Some schools do a Coffee & Conversations with the PTO
- Try meetings at different times to reach different parents
- Translate materials when you can.

- Citywide put together this presentation after we had some reports of disturbing behavior from parents within PTOs in the city.
