Nurse's Message
How is it possible that we have made it to May? With the 2024-2025 school year winding down and only 34 days left of school we are headed into the home stretch.
Housekeeping updates:

Housekeeping updates:
- Allergy season has arrived in full force this week. This is a difficult time for a lot of students. Unfortunately, there is little that the school nurse can do to help. I can offer education regarding washing hands/using compresses and support. We cannot give allergy medication. If your child is suffering from these symptoms, please consider giving them allergy medication, such as a children’s non-sedating antihistamine, for their symptoms in the morning before they leave for school. A phone consultation with your pediatrician/nurse can provide some readily available over the counter options. There are oral medications, eye drops and nasal sprays available for children. While these symptoms are irritating, if they do not have a fever or other significant health concerns, there is no need for a child to stay home from school. Allergy season lasts until the first heat wave and in the fall the first frost. Working together we can help alleviate the discomfort of these conditions.
- Ensure your child is up to date with their physical exams. All future 4th graders will need a physical.
- Schedule a vision exam if your child failed their in school exam. Visual difficulties will make accessing the curriculum difficult. The earlier children see the benefit of seeing with glasses the more likely they are to wear them.
- Make a plan to pick up your child’s medication on the last day of school - it will be here before you know it. The medication will include paperwork for you to have filled out during the summer for the upcoming school year. All medication given in school requires an original prescription and a doctor’s written order and parent permission to give the medication. Please call me if you have any questions on this.

Counselor's Corner - May Message 2025
We have entered that busy time of year again. (Wait. Is there a time that is not busy?!?) Spring sports, dance recitals, concerts, end-of-year celebrations, family events. It feels like we are going in so many directions. The stress of so many things can be overwhelming for adults, never mind for the kids. Added to the daily transitions, we are also coming up on the end of the school year which brings transitions of a different kind- finishing a grade, saying goodbye to teachers, wondering what next year will bring, moving onto the next chapter. Even if these are happy changes, they can still bring stress and along with it behaviors.
This month I wanted to share a resource about supporting children with transitions. Hopefully it will have some useful information for your family as you help your children learn how to handle transitions. You will see this resource linked below.
Wishing you all a lovely month.

Attendance
Chronic Absenteeism
In following up on previously shared communications about our attendance procedures and policies, as well as, the Massachusetts's Department of Education initiative to improve overall student attendance, this is a reminder to all families about Chronic Absenteeism monitoring. Students who miss at least 10% of days enrolled (e.g., 18 days absent when enrolled for 180 school days) are considered chronically absent in Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws (Chapter 76 Section 1) mandates that children between the ages of 6 and 16 years old attend school daily, on time, and obey all school rules. While we understand that some absences may be excused due to medical reasons, the total number of absences is what is counted under the definition of being Chronically Absent. Please check your child's report card for their current attendance record. We thank you for your support of healthy attendance habits!
Arrivals
I am sure you agree that the success your child attains in school is directly related to their daily attendance. Our school day begins promptly at 8:15 AM. Each time your child is absent, late or dismissed they are missing opportunities to learn. We understand there are times when families will run late or a special circumstance may come up; however, excused absences, tardies or dismissals only occur with a doctor’s note.
In January, we began the Be on time, Shine! initiative to promote positive arrival habits. We are excited to share the data of the last few months:

Attendance
Please review your child’s attendance record located at the top of the Term 1 report card. The record will indicate the number of total absences, tardies and dismissals we have on file for the current school year.
Please note, absences, tardies or dismissals can be excused with medical documentation. If you child missed school due to medical illness or an appointment, please provide a doctor’s note to our main office to excuse this absence. If you have any medical documentation for any of the absences listed, please provide those to the school main office as soon as possible so we can update our records. Mrs. Cerone is always available to consult with families regarding a child’s absence due to sickness.
We understand there are times when children are ill and unable to attend school or a special circumstance may come up; however, each time your child is absent, late or dismissed they are missing opportunities to learn. Our goal in Elementary school is to build strong routines for young learners to promote healthy attendance habits as students continue on to Middle and High School.
Tardy Arrivals: "Be On Time, Shine!" Intiative
We are excited to introduce a new initiative at Beechwood Knoll aimed at promoting punctuality and helping our students start their day on the right foot. Our "Be On Time, Shine!" initiative is designed to incentivize students to arrive at school on time each day.
We believe that arriving on time sets a positive tone for the day, helps students stay focused, and reinforces good habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. To make this a positive and rewarding experience, we’ve added incentives that we hope will motivate our students to make punctuality a priority.
How the Program Works
Starting on January 6th, we’ll be tracking on-time attendance and celebrating students who make punctuality a priority. Our school day begins promptly at 8:15 AM. Students who arrive on time each day will earn points towards monthly rewards and a chance to participate in special events.
Exciting Incentives
Ways You Can Support
You can help your child succeed in the program by establishing a morning routine that allows extra time to arrive at school on time. If we can be of further support to you and your family in establishing these routines, please do not hesitate to reach out. We want to help!
Please note, if your child is tardy due to a medical appointment, a tardy arrival will be medically excused with a note from a doctor.
We appreciate your support and commitment to helping our students develop these valuable habits. Thank you for your partnership in making Beechwood Knoll a place where every student can shine!
