Solar Eclipse - Monday, April 8th
Do's and Don'ts for viewing the solar eclipse on April 8th safely.
✅ DO:
❌ DON'T:
✅ DO:
- Use eclipse glasses or solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 standards (sometimes written as ISO 12312-2:2015). Do not stare continuously at the sun. Take breaks and give your eyes a rest.
- Use your hands to cast shadows on the ground. Cross your hands with fingers slightly spread to create a waffle pattern. Look down and you will see the spaces between your fingers project a shadow image of the sun in a crescent shape during the partial eclipse stages.
- Look at shadows on the ground, such as beneath a leafy tree, during the partial eclipse to see the crescent sun shadows projected by the spaces between the leaves.
❌ DON'T:
- Do not look at the sun directly. Do not view through regular sunglasses. No matter how dark they are, they will not protect your eyes.
- Do not use damaged eclipse sunglasses or solar viewers. If they are torn, scratched or punctured, do not use them and throw them away. If the filters are coming out of their frames, discard them.
- Do not use homemade filters.
- Do not view through welder's glass. The glass in most welding helmets is not strong enough.
- Do not view through your camera viewfinder.
- Do not view through a telescope without the proper solar filter. Do not view the telescope using your eclipse sunglasses either.
- Do not view through binoculars.

On February 7, thanks to the BKS PTO, our talented friends at Wah Lum Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy came to perform a traditional Lion Dance for our school.
And on February 9, we hosted our annual Lunar New Year parade! Students came to school dressed in traditional attire or wearing the lucky colors of red and gold to honor the occasion and proudly marched through the halls to welcome the Year of the Dragon!

5th Grade Leadership Summit
[Posted on 02/15/2024]
Quincy Public Schools proudly hosted our annual Fifth Grade Student Council Leadership Summit, bringing together 5th grade Student Council leaders from across the district today. We were thrilled to have our NQHS and QHS Senior Class Officers, our partners from the Hale Family YMCA, and Jennifer Barr, Director of Communications - Stop and Shop Companies, join us for this special event.
Our student leaders started the day with a delicious breakfast and leadership activities, led by our partners at the YMCA and our high school class officers, that encouraged teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. The energy in the room was fantastic as our 5th graders got acquainted with each other and worked together on each of their group activities.
The highlight of the event was the remarks from our community leaders, including Ms. Barr and Ciara Golden, QHS Senior Class President. They shared their insights and experiences on leadership, inspiring our students to strive for kindness and a genuine interest in--and respect for--their teams as they hone their leadership skills.
The event concluded with a presentation of leadership awards from each school's principal, recognizing the outstanding contributions of our student leaders. We are incredibly proud of all our students and can't wait to see what the future holds for these remarkable young leaders!
Our participants from Beechwood Knoll: Mateo Ballestas, Penelope Thang, Katalyna Guinto, Catherine Zou, Matthias Jae

Kids Heart Challenge (Jump Rope for Heart)
& PE class with Mrs. Fran
Dear Parents/Guardians ~
This week your child has come home with a sheet from the American Heart Association regarding the Kids Heart Challenge (aka Jump Rope for ❤️).
This sheet is information on fundraising if you should want to pursue this as a family. There is no commitment to this by any means. There is a QR code on the top of the sheet to scan or you could go under heart.org/Schools to register if you choose to go that route. The students have all been explained the sheet and the levels of fundraising if you again as a family choose to do so.
Your child will be participating in this event during their PE class during the week of February 12th regardless if your child raises money. It is a great way to tie Heart health month and exercise together for the American Heart Association ❤️. Just to register, I will give your child a cool heart bracelet! No money involved! Thank you for your time!
Stay healthy!

Nurse's Message - February 2024
February is American Heart Month. A time when we spotlight cardiovascular health. The younger we adopt healthy habits the more benefit we gain and the more likely the habits will stick.
Healthy food intake equals healthy hearts. A heart healthy diet focuses on whole foods. Increasing fruits and vegetables will provide you and your child with good fiber, vitamins and minerals. Whole grains, lean protein and low fat dairy round out the balanced diet. Reduce processed food to the extent possible aiming to avoid high fat baked goods and foods with saturated fats. Keeping healthy foods available and limiting access to snack foods can make a huge difference in caloric intake. One good resource with tips and recipes is https://www.myplate.gov/eat-healthy/what-is-myplate
A strong heart is a healthy heart. Exercise is recommended for all age groups. A simple walk once daily for 30 minutes can be a great start. Studies have shown exercise can still be beneficial even if broken up into smaller increments (ie. 3 ten min walks daily). If you are truly sedentary make sure you stand up and walk around every hour you are awake for a few minutes. Limiting or earning screen time by being active can help the whole family get moving. As the routine takes hold, challenge yourself to increase your minutes or intensity. Family activities to get everyone moving include bike rides, nature walks, swimming, and outdoor games. Another great resource with exercise tips is

If you need help or are in need of suggestions to help your child, please feel free to call the health office. My phone number is 617-984-8632 or email [email protected]
I greatly appreciate your help in keeping me informed and keeping our kids healthy and learning.

Couselor's Corner - February 2024
Happy February! So many interesting things are going on this month. Black History Month, Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year, February Vacation. There is one more that you may not know about… National School Counseling Week is February 5-9, 2024. School Counseling Week is an annual opportunity to highlight the roles school counselors play in schools. As the Beechwood Knoll school counselor, I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to (re-)introduce myself to you and share what school counseling looks like at BKS.
Who am I?
My name is Mrs. Maura Hurst. This is my 11th year at Beechwood Knoll School and 21st year in Quincy Public Schools. I graduated from Merrimack College and Villanova University. I am married to a high school English teacher and am the proud aunt of four.
Why School Counseling?
I come from a family of educators. My grandmother was a one-room schoolhouse teacher in rural Wisconsin. My mother’s siblings are all either teachers or married to teachers. My sister is a teacher. My cousins are mostly teachers (or married to teachers). Even my brother is now a teacher (granted he teaches MBTA bus drivers.) You could say education is in my blood. I always wanted to be a teacher. When in college I discovered psychology and counseling, I knew I needed to find a way to combine the two. School Counseling is the perfect combination for me- working with kids in schools and helping them solve problems.
What does School Counseling look like at Beechwood Knoll School?
As a school counselor, I wear many hats. I listen to children and help them sort through feelings and problems. I work with teachers to address issues that interfere with learning. I support parents as they support their children through the ups and downs of childhood. I collaborate with school staff to foster a school culture that supports learning. I teach social-emotional skills that help students develop as whole people. I facilitate Special Education evaluations and meetings to address student needs. All of these have one goal: Helping students do their best learning.
Whether it is in a lunch group, individually, or during a classroom lesson, connecting with kids is the best part of my job. I truly view it as an honor to travel with them, and their families, through childhood. As always, please reach out if I can support your family.

Nurse's Message - January 2024
Welcome back! A few reminders as we enter the height of cold and flu season. Please keep your child home if they have any of the following symptoms:
Some other reminders for the rest of the year:
I greatly appreciate your help in keeping our school community healthy and safe.
Mrs. Cerone, MSN, RN
617-984-8632
[email protected]
- Temperature of 100.5 or higher within the last 24 hours
- Vomiting or diarrhea (must be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school)
- Coughing that is uncontrolled
Some other reminders for the rest of the year:
- Please call your child out if they will be absent. Excused absences only occur with a doctor’s note. We are not recommending you take your child to the doctor with every illness, but it can be helpful with prolonged illness.
- Mark/label clothes with your child’s name/initials. We have a large lost and found and if initials are on clothing we can track their owner much more easily.
- In Elementary, folders are used for communication by all the staff to families. Please make sure you check them weekly if not daily. A 2nd notice will be going home if you received a vision letter and you have not returned it.
I greatly appreciate your help in keeping our school community healthy and safe.

Couselor's Corner - January 2024
Happy New Year! I hope your families had a wonderful holiday season and made some fun memories over vacation week.
Open Parachute lessons continue in classrooms from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Topics have ranged from learning about emotions, building friendships skills, and strengthening resilience. It has been wonderful to learn alongside your children as they learn about themselves and build skills they will carry with them through life’s experiences.
In addition to their Open Parachute lessons with our school psychologist, First Grade is also learning about emotions with me using A Little Spot series of books by Diane Alber. With these books, the children learn about the various emotions we all experience and how they help us. They also learn that when emotions get too big, they can get in the way. We feel best when we are in our Calm, Peaceful Spot. The books teach the students strategies to calm big emotions in order to get back to the Peaceful Spot. (So far we have done the Green and Red Spots.)
I wanted to share the Little Spot Parent Guide with all of you. I think it offers some nice language to use with kids about their emotions and teaching them how to manage them. It also offers helpful tips for adults when working with children. (And maybe a few tips for ourselves!) Whether your child is in First Grade or a different grade, take a look at this resource when you have time. I hope you find it interesting.
Wishing you all the best in 2024!

Thursday, November 16, 2023
Dear BKS Families,
Hayward Photography will be at Beechwood Knoll School on Thursday, November 16th for picture retakes. If you would like your child’s picture retaken, please return your original package or no buy card to school on the retake day and ask your child to give it to our photographer. You may keep the classroom group picture as they will not be reprinted. Please include a note on the envelope detailing the reason for the retake.
If your child forgets their original pictures, they may still have a retake, however, we will not print any new pictures until the originals have been returned to our office. If your child was absent on the original picture day, they may be photographed as well. Please request a copy of the order form that the school initially shared, fill out the bottom in its entirety and send with your cash or check payment into school on retake day. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].

QPS Free Meals for School Year 2023-2024
[Date sent via email: 8/23/2023]
Dear QPS Community,
The School Nutrition Department is excited to announce that Governor Healey signed the state budget that includes permanent school meals for all Massachusetts public school students! We are excited to be a part of this monumental change and look forward to continuing to serve nutritious meals to the Quincy community. That being said, it is important to understand exactly how this will influence your child's school day.
Each school serves breakfast in the cafeteria, fifteen minutes before the morning bell and up to 10 minutes after the bell. Breakfast includes whole grain, fruit, and reduced-fat milk. We encourage your children to take advantage of this service, as a healthy morning meal powers children of all ages to reach their full academic potential.
Free lunch will continue to be served every school day including all half days at the K-12 level. Elementary schools will continue to serve lunch in the classroom on Wednesday half days to ensure maximum access to a healthy meal throughout the week. We began half-day feedings last school year and it has been a great success to the program. All meals include whole grain, lean protein options, fruit variety, rotating vegetable options, and reduced-fat milk. We carefully curate our menus to represent nutrient-rich ingredients, popular items that excite the students, and culturally unique meals to connect with the community.
Please note, although every child is permitted one breakfast and one lunch meal a day, second meals, beverages, or snacks are available for purchase (snacks sold only at the middle and high schools). The price list includes:
Elementary
Breakfast: $1.25 full price, $0.25 reduced price
Lunch: $3.25 full price, $0.40 reduced price
Milk: $0.50
MS/HS
Breakfast: $1.50 full price, $0.25 reduced price
Lunch: $3.50 full price, $0.40 reduced price
Milk: $0.50
Snack prices: Varies
Adults
Breakfast: $2.00
Lunch: $5.00
Milk: $0.65
We strongly continue to encourage families to complete the free and reduced meal application, as there are many other financial benefits, such as access to the P-EBT/Summer EBT benefits, discounts on internet/cable service, free SAT testing, waivers on college application fees, etc. Please visit our Quincy School Nutrition website for an application: https://www.schoolnutritionandfitness.com/index.php?sid=1597177079586. Here you can also find other useful information such as menus, pre-payment options, links to our social media accounts, and educational tools. Or you can also go to quincypublicschools.com and find our website under the School Nutrition Department information link in the center of the home page.
If your child attends one of our Community Eligible Provisions (CEP) schools, you do not have to complete a meal eligibility application unless you wish to receive the added benefits listed above. Quincy CEP schools include Lincoln Hancock, Parker, Snug Harbor, Clifford Marshall, South West, Broad Meadows, and Point Webster. If you are interested, please consider applying for SNAP, the federal nutrition program that provides eligible residents with monthly financial assistance to purchase groceries. More SNAP information can be found at gettingsnap.org or by calling Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline at 1-800-645-8333.
We are also proud to announce our continued partnership with Project Bread on the School Food Fellowship program. We are fortunate to have trained culinary chefs working alongside us in our kitchens to provide skills to our staff, and offer support in recipe development and cafeteria tastings.
Ensuring QPS children are getting the proper nutrition they need during school is our main priority. School lunch is critical to overall student health and well-being. It ensures that students have the nutrition they need throughout the long school day to learn to their greatest capacity. We look forward to serving all students in the fall. Please contact the school nutrition office with further questions: 617-984-8768.
Sincerely,
Sara Dufour, RDN, M.Ed.
